The Lake Country Art Gallery invites submissions to our

annual juried Members Exhibition.

Artists are invited to submit recent work directly to the gallery

on Friday February 24^th or Saturday February 25^th 2012

Important Information

Deliveries of artwork accepted February 2012: on Friday 24between 10am and 4pm or Saturday 25 between 11am and 3pm.
Artwork must be recent (created in 2011 or 2012)
2 pieces not wider then 36” each may be submitted
Submissions must include a brief artist statement and biography
Artwork must be clearly and securely labeled on the back with title, name of artist, price and must be ready to hang
Completed membership form & payments may be included with submission
The gallery will receive a 20% commission on any sales for this exhibition

Timeline
Saturday 24 February 3pm: deadline to submit work
Tuesday 28 February to Thursday 1 March: jury and hang the artwork
Notification to artists by Friday 1 March for collection of any unselected work
Saturday 3 March: Opening Reception 11am-3pm

An evening in conversation with Lake Country Artist David Alexander and Curator of the Iceland Museum of Design Adalsteinn Ingólfsson

Tuesday, January 17th 2012 7pm
at the Lake Country Art Gallery

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to hear David Alexander in conversation with Adalsteinn Ingolfsson. Topics will range from Alexander's show currently on at the Kelowna Art Gallery, European Artists residencies, the connections between Iceland and Canada, the Art Scenes in each country and reciprocal exchanges of ideas and facilities.

Adalsteinn Ingolfsson was born in Iceland in 1948. He studied literature and art in Scotland, England, Italy and Sweden. Completed Master's degree in English Literature and málsögu University of St. Andrews, Andrews, Scotland, and master degree in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. He has worked as an art teacher at Art School (Kjarvalsstaðir), the National Gallery and other institutions, has been an art critic and cultural editor of DV, as well as working elements for radio and television. He has taught at the Arts and Crafts and the University of Iceland. Athelstan has written over twenty books on Icelandic artists, including Kjarval, Kristin Jonsdottir, Eric Smith, Leif Breiðfjörð, Kristjan Davidsson and Sigurjón Ólafsson, as well as books on the Faroese artists. He was also Director of Design Museum of Iceland and is currently working as a researcher, writer and curator.

David Alexander studied at the Vancouver Art School and Langara College art dept. and then graduated with a BFA from Notre Dame University. In 1980 he moved to Saskatoon to obtain his Master degree while researching in New York, London and Paris. He has travelled the world to attend his exhibitions, conduct lectures and drawing and painting research. In 2006 Alexander attended the Morris Graves Foundation in California as an invited guest artist in residence and completed a large body of small paintings on wood panels. In 2007 he visited Tokyo and Kyoto and was inspired by the parks and water features. David Alexander's art is in many public, private and corporate collections throughout the world, including The Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum of London, University of Toronto and Concordia University in Montreal, Museum of Art in Iceland, Canadian Embassies in Berlin, Beijing and Krakow. Corporate collections also include works throughout Canadian cities as well as Dubai, Seoul, New York, Mumbai and Nice France and others. Alexander's signature landscapes/waterscapes represent his significant 40 career in painting through a bold palette and gestural application.

'Lose Yourself to the Answers Within'
An exhibition of Monoprints by Cee Bond, Julie Elliot and Petrina McNeill

12 January to 26 February

We invite you will join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday January 14th 11am-3pm.

There is a certain amount of 'letting go' in the artmaking process for these three artists. All the work begins with an intention, a thought, a concept as the starting point. For Bond, Elliot and McNeill, making art is like collaborating with an invisible other, that creates a kind of call and response within the process of their work.

There will be a further opportunity to talk with the Artists on Wednesday 18 January from 7pm - 9pm

This year will be an exciting one for anyone interested in or intrigued by the many varied processes available to the Printmaker.

Winter at LCAG

We have lots going on this winter at the Lake Country Art Gallery!

Join us on Saturday December 17th from 11:00am-3:00pm for our holiday open house including Annual Under 100 Show and Sale and choir music. This show features over forty artists' smallest works. All art in the show is priced under 100 dollars and is under 100 square inches. This is the perfect chance to catch up on your Christmas shopping, support local artists, and your gallery! Art has been flying off the walls so be sure to make in down to the gallery to see the new work we have been adding.

For a couple extra days of shopping, we will be open December 19th and 20th from 10am-4pm and the show will wrap up on December 21st.

The Lake Country Art Gallery will be closed from December 22nd until January 12th 2012 for the holidays. The staff and board would like to wish you all happy holidays and a good 2012.

Diversity in Drawing Exhibition

EXHIBITION: October 13 - November 13, 2011
OPENING: October 13th, 2011 7 - 9pm
The Lake Country Art Gallery is pleased present Diversity in Drawing, an exhibition curated by guest curators Jim Kalnin and Destanne Norris. This exhibition, which runs from October 13 to November 13, 2011, will present the the drawings and cross-disciplinary work of nine Okanagan-based artists; Renee Burgess, Carin Covin, Wanda Lock, Heidi Maddess, Shauna Oddleifson, Gary Pearson, Amber Powell, Tia-Maria Soroskie and Jim Tanner.

The work of these nine artists consists of diverse approaches to drawing, ranging from detailed, autobiographic charcoal renderings with historical references; to wall drawings and three-dimensional floor drawings that explore human energy; to oil or acrylic works on paper; to transparent embroidered abstract drawings. “Diversity in Drawing” is an exhibition that demonstrates that drawing does not exist solely as a separate art discipline; that it exists everywhere in our daily lives.

An opening reception will be held October 13, from 7pm - 9pm. Artist and guest curators will be in attendance.

Regular gallery hours are Wednesdays 10am-8pm, Thursdays and Fridays 10am-4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 11am-3pm.

Admission to the Lake Country Public Art Gallery is free. Donations are gratefully accepted and are used to support exhibitions and events.

"Eye Tunes, A Rhapsody of Art " - Art Walk @ LCAG

Join the Lake Country Art Gallery for our latest exhibition "Eye Tunes, A Rhapsody of Art." which opens September 10th.

The Lake Country Art Gallery has partnered with Art Walk to present work inspired by this year’s Art Walk theme, "Eye Tunes, A Rhapsody of Art." Participating Art Walk artists have each been invited to place a piece of art in the gallery, where it will be on display until October 9th. This will give the public chance to visit the work Art Walk Artists for the whole month of September!

The Lake Country Art Gallery will be open 10am-5pm both Saturday September 10th and Sunday September 11th during Art Walk.

The regular gallery hours are Wednesdays 10am-8pm, Thursdays and Fridays 10am-4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 11am-3pm.

Join us every Wednesday night for our open studio. From 5pm to 8pm we are open for artists and art appreciators of all levels so share their inspiration, create, collaborate, connect, discuss, and become inspired. Suggested donation $2.00.

Admission to the Lake Country Art Gallery is free.

September is Coming!

You have two weeks left to view our latest exhibition, "Snap Shot" works by Glenn Clark. The show has been very well received offering something for all art tastes. One comment in our guest book reads, "the best art I have ever seen"! "Snap Shot" will be up until September 4th.

The gallery will be closed the week of September 5th until September 9th, while we install our next exhibition.

Summer is finally here!

We have updated the "Newsletter" tab to the right. There, you will find the August newsletter that includes all the latest gallery news.

Now at the gallery- "Snap Shot," paintings by Glenn Clark.

Clark’s paintings range from small landscapes on panel to large portraits on canvas. He describes his work as embodying “a general Canadian experience” and invites the viewer “to contemplate the common place, and snapshots one would expect to uncover in a typical family photo album.”

Our regular gallery hours are Wednesday 10am-8pm, Thursday and Friday 10am-4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 11am-3pm.

Be sure to drop into the gallery Wednesday evenings between 5 and 8 for our open studio where you can connect with other artists, create work, and discuss art-related topics. This is a great chance to develop collaborations and share techniques!

A new exhibition at the Lake Country Art Gallery
June 4, 2011 to July 17, 2011

Guest curators Wanda Lock and Shauna Oddleifson along with the gallery’s Volunteer Curator Jim Kalnin have been busy putting together an exhibition titled ‘Starting Point’ that will open at the Lake Country Art Gallery in June.

‘Starting Point’ is an exhibition to recognize and acknowledge art teacher Rick Davidson. Rick Davidson was the art teacher at George Elliot Secondary from 1979 to 2007 and many of his students have gone on to pursue careers in the visual arts. The exhibition will honour Rick’s contribution to education and the arts as well as recognize some amazing artists.

All of the artists participating in the exhibition grew up in Lake Country and had Rick as a teacher. The participating artists are from across Canada, from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland and include film makers, video documentary artists, painters, web designers, textile and costume design, industrial design, writers, animators, plus many more, 23 artists in total.

Participating artists include; Christy Caza, Brittany Falk, Josie Grant, Emily Geen, Joanne Gervais, Shannon Lester, Tiziana La Melia, Mark Lewis, Wanda Lock, Dave Lopes, Mike McKinlay, Sam McKinlay, Gord McClure, Kevin McPherson, Janelle Morcombe, Karen Nightengale, Shauna Oddeifson, Curt Oland, Amber Powell, Jordy Starling, Brad Tomlinson, Anna Vouladakis
and Gwendolyn Williams.

Opening night is Saturday June 4th from 4 to 7pm. There will be a panel discussion on Thursday June 16th at 7pm and a screening of Mark Lewis’ film ‘Ill Fated’ on Sunday July 10th at 2pm. The exhibition runs until July 17th. For more information please contact the Lake Country Art Gallery.

Art on the Edge!

Wednesday April 27 to Sunday May 29

Art on the Edge! showcases art works by the SD23 students in Lake Country. Please join us as we celebrate the diverse talents of our local students and enjoy refreshments and other special features as we celebrate this second annual exhibition.

The exhibit will run from April 27 – May 29, 2011. Gallery hours are Wednesday: 10am – 8pm, Thursday & Friday: 10am – 4pm, Saturday & Sunday: 11am – 3pm.

Art on the Edge! is a collaboration between the Gallery and Lake Country schools, and will consist of both 2D and 3D works by local SD23 students from George Elliot Secondary School, Davidson Road Elementary School, Oyama Traditional School and Peter Greer Elementary School.

“We are very pleased to be presenting our second annual exhibition of student artwork at the Lake Country Art Gallery,” said Sharon McCoubrey, President of the Society. “The Gallery strongly supports the arts programs in our schools, contributing to the learning and development of creative skills. We look forward to many years of working with the schools to showcase the diverse artistic talents of local youth.”

Art on the Edge! opens for public viewing during regular gallery hours beginning Wednesday April 27 and will close on Sunday May 29.

Life, Nature, Art & Healing with Destanne Norris

Spirit Festival Special Events at the Lake Country Art Gallery

Thursday February 24, 2011 @ 7pm

Please join us as artist Destanne Norris presents Life, Nature, Art & Healing, encapsulating her journey and practice as an artist from her undergraduate days, to her Master of Fine Art studies, to the present day. A passion for natural environments and the elements, especially mountains and water, are the source of Norris’ artistic inspiration, while landscape and place, metaphor and symbol, embodiment and Romanticism are her research interests. Through her art, she has discovered the power art can play in self-discovery and healing.
Destanne Norris received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (honours) in painting and drawing from the University of Victoria in 1987 and a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Tasmania in 2009. Norris` paintings have been exhibited in public, university and artist-run galleries and is represented in numerous private and corporate collections, as well as being in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Penticton Art Gallery. The artist is represented by Gallery Odin at Silver Star Mountain and by Mountain Galleries in Jasper, Banff and Whistler. Norris currently resides in Vernon.
Life, Nature, Art & Healing is one of three special events being held at the Lake Country Art Gallery during the month of February as part of the first Central Okanagan Spirit Festival, along with our current exhibit Relations. Relations features works by several 1st Nations Okanagan artists including Lee Claremont, Stephen Foster, Catherine Jameson, Janine Lott, and June Paul. Other Spirit Festival special events at the Lake Country Art Gallery include The Re-emergence of Okanagan Traditional Fibres on Thursday February 10 with Ruby Alexis of the Okanagan Indian Band and an artist talk on Thursday February 17 with the Relations artists.

This will be a Juried Show

Submission Requirements
Bring artwork to the gallery 11am-3pm February 26 or February 27 only
Artwork created in 2010/11 will be accepted
2 pieces of artwork no wider than 30” (including frame) may be submitted

Spirit Festival Special Events at the Lake Country Art Gallery Relations Artists Talk & Culture Evening

Please join us for an informative and eclectic artist talk with First Nations artists Lee Claremont, Stephen Foster, Catherine Jameson, Janine Lott, and June Paul, artist participants in our current exhibit Relations. Relations is one of 16 arts and culture events forming the 2011 Central Okanagan Spirit Festival, a new initiative fashioned through the Province of BC’s 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy to celebrate the spirit behind hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. The evening will also include poetry readings by artist and author Catherine Jameson.

Lee Claremont is of Mohawk/Irish ancestry and is a member of the Grand River Iroquois Six Nations in Oshweken, Ontario. She is a well respected instructor at the En’Owkin Centre, an internationally recognized Aboriginal Educational college in Penticton BC. Her art making takes her to a place of creation, soaring with the Skywoman to create an eclectic perception of nature, people, spirituality and Mother Earth.

Stephen Foster is a video and electronic media artist of mixed Haida and European background. He is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Summer Institute for Interdisciplinary Indigenous Graduate Studies at UBC Okanagan. His work tends to deal with issues of indigenous representation in popular culture through personal narrative.

Catherine Jameson is a Secwepemc and Syilx artist living within her traditional territory with her family. Catherine is primarily a spoken word poet who earned a certificate in Indigenous Fine Arts and published a children's book, Zoe and the Fawn and wishes to pursue public performance and recording.

Janine Lott is a member of the Westbank First Nation who works primarily with hard shell gourds. Gourds have managed to survive for thousands of years due to their strength and ability to adapt and thrive in a wide range of environments. As a First Nations woman, she sees this journey to be much like that of aboriginal people. In this way, she finds the gourd to be the perfect canvas.

June Paul is a member of the Okanagan Nation who has lived in Penticton most of her life. She has created art since childhood and studied visual art at Okanagan College in Penticton and Kelowna. Recently she studied at the En’Owkin Centre and gained knowledge of her traditional values, history and language.

The Relations Artist Talk is one of three special events at the Lake Country Art Gallery during February. Others include a presentation on February 10 by Ruby Alexis of the Okanagan Indian Band on The Re-emergence of Okanagan Traditional Fibres. On Thursday February 24 artist Destanne Norris will present Life, Nature, Art & Healing, exploring the power art can play in self-discovery and healing.

A fun and informative all-day workshop designed to introduce you to the skills and

Spirit Festival Special Events at the Lake Country Art Gallery

The Lake Country Art Gallery is pleased to announce three special events taking place during the month of February as part of the first Central Okanagan Spirit Festival. The events are held in conjunction with their current exhibit Relations, on display at the gallery until Sunday February 27.

Thursday February 10th - a presentation by Ruby Alexis from the Okanagan Indian Band on The Re-emergence of Okanagan Traditional Fibres, exploring a variety of traditional fibres used by the Okanagan-Syilx peoples in a historical, modern, functional and artistic context. The presentation will emphasize the prominent role of "sp'its'n or Hemp Dogbane in Okanagan-Syilx and other Plateau tribal cultures. Sp’its’n, [speets-in] or Dogbane hemp, is a traditional and culturally significant fibre plant used by the Okanagan-Syilx and other Plateau tribes in Canada and the United States. Also included in the evening will be a weaving and processing demonstration, including twining/weaving with April Alexis –Phelan and Ruby Alexis and netting/dip net with Wally Louis, Kenny Williams and Gary Bonneau. Both projects involve the processing of raw fibre with opportunities for hands on participation.

The Lake Country Art Gallery opened their first exhibition of 2011. 'Relations'

features a variety of works by several 1st Nations Okanagan artists including Lee Claremont,

Stephen Foster, Catherine Jameson, Janine Lott, and June Paul.

Relations is one of 13 arts and culture events forming the 2011 Central Okanagan Spirit Festival,

a new initiative fashioned through the 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy created by the Province to

celebrate the spirit behind hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Spirit Festival runs throughout the

month of February.

“The gallery is very much looking forward to exhibiting the diversity of contemporary 1st

Nations artwork that forms Relations,” commented curator Jim Kalnin. “From acrylic

paintings, mixed media and fibre arts pieces, through to multi-media installations, I think

gallery visitors will find this vital, eclectic exhibit both intriguing and educational.”

The exhibit will be open to visitors on Saturday January 15 from 11am-3pm with the Opening

Reception held from 3pm-6pm, and will be on display at the gallery until Sunday February 27.

Special events for the Spirit Festival will also be held in February with details to follow.

Admission to the Lake Country Public Art Gallery is free. Donations are gratefully accepted

The Lake Country Art Gallery is pleased to announce their first annual Christmas show and fundraising event > Under 100

An Opening Reception with the artists will be held on Saturday November 20 from 11am-3pm.

There will also be an Open House on Sunday December 12 from 3pm – 5pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The exhibition and sale of small art works and crafts runs from November 20 to December 21, 2010 in both the Gallery and the adjoining Coffee House, and will consist of a wide range of small, high quality, saleable works. The title, Under 100, refers to the restrictions placed on works in the exhibition, with their size limited to under 100 square inches and the price to under $100.
“We are very happy to provide a venue for artists to display and sell their smaller works during the holiday season”, said Executive Director Janet Anderson. “The public will have a month long opportunity to view and purchase a variety of unique artwork while supporting their local public art gallery.”

Regular gallery hours are Wednesday: 10am to 8pm, Thursday & Friday: 10am to 4pm and Saturday & Sunday: 11am to 3pm.
The gallery will also be open on Monday December 20 & Tuesday December 21 from 10am-4pm to accommodate last minute shoppers.

Walking & Talking Artist Talk

On November 4th Artists Julie Elliot, Mary McCulloch and Marlene McPherson gave a public artist talk at the Lake Country Art Gallery. The artists each spoke about their work and then guided attendees through the gallery while addressing specific details about their pieces.
Harvest is the 7th exhibition shown at the public art gallery since opening in January 2010.

The Lake Country Art Gallery opened new exhibition Harvest, featuring works by several Okanagan artists including Mary Bull, Julie Elliot, Lois Huey-Heck, Gary Langrish, Mary McCulloch and Marlene McPherson.

“This exhibition expands the idea of harvest beyond the traditional painted responses of orchard scenes and pickers at work,” explained curator Jim Kalnin. “While there are excellent examples of these types of paintings included, there are also many varied and less typical responses. These include a heartfelt statement about the state of the apple industry, works that look at fruit as universal symbols, and paintings that speak as much about the nature of paint and colour as they do about orchards or fruit. I hope that viewers find this eclectic collection both thought-provoking and enjoyable.”

The exhibit opened with a reception on Thursday October 14, and will be on display at the gallery until Sunday November 14.

September was All About Coffee at the Lake Country Art Gallery!

The Lake Country Art Gallery was the Theme Venue for the 2010 Lake Country ArtWalk. The theme for the 17th annual ArtWalk was Gallery Grande, and explored the meeting of coffee and art, expressing creativity through a coffee topic.

Janet Anderson, Executive Director of the Lake Country Art Gallery said “.. we just opened in January 2010, this will be our first time participating in ArtWalk, and the added fun and convenience of being connected to the Lake Country Coffee House makes our site the perfect setting to display the themed artworks. In addition, our close location to the other ArtWalk venues makes it easy for visitors to walk just a little further down the road to view the additional 40 artworks.”

The exhibit, consisting of works created specifically around the Gallery Grande theme by ArtWalk participants, was display during ArtWalk on Saturday and Sunday September 11 & 12 and continued through to October 10.

Second Exhibition Set to Open at Lake Country Art Gallery. "Sculpture Partners With Abstract"

The Lake Country Art Gallery Society is preparing to open its second show at the new public venue. The Art Gallery displays exhibitions by local artists and those from other regions. The popular inaugural exhibition, Celebrating Lake Country, included a variety of works by 21 local artists.
The new themed exhibition, a juried show entitled "Sculpture Partners With Abstract", will consist of both 2D and 3D works by local artists.
Sculpture Partners With Abstract will be available for public viewing during normal Gallery hoursbeginning Thursday March 18. The Gallery will celebrate the new exhibition with a public reception on Sunday March 21 beginning at 1:30pm. Winter hours of the Lake Country Art Gallery are Thursday – Saturday from 10am – 4pm, and Sundays from 12pm – 4pm.

The Lake Country Art Gallery will open on January 22, 2010 at 4:00 pm with a celebratory event and inaugural exhibition that
everyone is invited to attend.

Long a dream of a group of Lake Country artists and community members, the opening ofthe first public art gallery in Lake Country is an important step in its development as a community. “This is a significant and exciting occasion because the new art gallery will provide many opportunities for artists in the area, and will offer a variety of new cultural experiences for all citizens”, explains Society President Sharon McCoubrey. “We hope that all community members and visitors to Lake Country will enjoy regularly visiting our new gallery, and take advantage of the assortment of participatory opportunities offered throughout the year”.

The Lake Country Art Gallery will display exhibitions by local artists and those from other regions. Artwork by both emerging and established artists will be showcased, and the gallery will also present various speakers, films, workshops, educational sessions and other related events throughout the year.

Given that public art galleries do not have the same opportunities for revenue potential as commercial galleries, memberships are an essential means of support to ensure the success of the venue. “Admission to the Lake Country Art Gallery will be free so that everyone has the opportunity to visit” said McCoubrey. “We encourage everyone interested in supporting
local artists to purchase a membership to the Gallery, which are reasonably priced and offer several benefits”.
